Signs your pet needs care right away
  • Trouble breathing, choking, or nonstop coughing or gagging
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop within five minutes
  • A seizure, staggering, or unconsciousness
  • Trouble urinating or passing stool, or obvious pain when trying
  • Possibly eaten something poisonous, such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate or rodent poison
  • A broken bone, an eye injury, or heatstroke
  • Vomiting or diarrhea more than twice in 24 hours, or no drinking for 24 hours or more
  • Obvious signs of pain or extreme distress

    Many accredited U.S. veterinary schools run teaching hospitals or community clinics. Call the nearest one and ask whether it offers reduced-cost or emergency care.
  • Pet Help Finder
    Choose “Veterinary Services” and enter your city or ZIP code to find lower-cost clinics, pet food, supplies and boarding help. Confirm costs and eligibility before you travel.
  • SpayUSA
    National referral network for lower-cost spay/neuter, including help for community cats. Use the online form or call (800) 248-7729.
  • Your local humane society or SPCA
    Many run low-cost clinics or know which ones near you take sick or injured pets. Ask what they offer and who qualifies.
